On Saturday, National Trails Day, the White House Millennium Council formally announced the selection of the proposed Lewis and Clark Discovery Trail as a Community Millennium Trail. The trail was nominated for the designation by the Portland-based National Coast Trail Association.

First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, in her letter of greeting on National Trails Day said, "Millennium Trails are tangible gifts to the future that represent a commitment and an investment in the kind of country we want to create in the 21st century. It is my hope that the energy that has sparked this growing national movement will be sustained and nurtured so that trails are part of our nations' heritage for many generations to come."

Al LePage, executive directory of NCTA, said the proposed trails "wouldn't just be a trail, but a real opportunity to personally connect with history.

"Just think, you'd be traveling along the same areas and visiting the same places as Lewis and Clark did as they finally achieved their goal of reaching the Pacific Ocean.

"It would also serve to highlight and tie together three significant end-points of the expedition generally unknown to the American public. First, Station Camp itself, the very place where they first saw the Pacific ... Next the beach between Cape disappointment and McKenzie Head ... and finally, the actual vicinity of the City of Long Beach."

"We are delighted that your plans for your trail reflect the Millennium Council's theme to 'Honor the Past - Imagine the Future," said Ellen McCulloch-Lovell, director of the White House Millennium Council. "Your local leadership will play a vital role in the completion of a network of trails that will connect the American people to their land, their history and their future. On behalf of the President and our First Lady, I send my congratulations to you and to all who contribute to the development of this trail."
